A cruise on a luxurious yacht turns disastrous when a storm maroons the ship on a desert island. Its passengers, a group of business executives and celebrities, along with their millionaire host and his pompous chef, must find a way to survive. But while they argue and panic, the illiterate Chinese-Korean cook, Young Soo, starts collecting food, plants vegetables, and begins constructing huts and an irrigation system. While he speaks little English, he becomes indispensable, and through his industriousness and humility, serves to change the rest of his castaways for the better. More than a retold “Gilligan’s Island” tale, “Young Soo, Castaway Chef” is a touching drama about what really are the important things in life. Writer: Eric Nemoto. Pages: 104.
