Rick & His Inspiration For A Production Company
LOGLINE: A sardonic, amoral, two-bit con man goes looking for the wrong kind of love in the right kind of place where he comes across a mysterious vixen who may or may not be his meal ticket to paradise.
MINI-SYNOPSIS: An amoral and sardonic two-bit con man looks for the wrong kind of love in the right kind of place where he comes across a mysterious vixen who may or may not be his meal ticket to paradise. A spooky science fiction fantasy that takes place inside a century-old former hotel that is purported to be haunted, Sins Of The Flesh is a mysterious, supernatural thriller that will certainly take a “bite” out of you. It stars actors Yama Radtke, as the con-man figuratively biting off more than he can chew, and Tristy Chun, as the vixen who literally plans on chewing him up. No con there. In an eerie tale that offers up macabre as the entree on the menu, this short film is a ghoulishly gastronomic delight.

Background
Rick Bernico’s association with Hawaii’s creative community dates back for years. Being first and foremost a photographer, he has successfully run his Hawaii Profiles photography studio (see logo below) for years out of the Blaisdell Hotel building on 1154 Fort Street Mall, Suite 221, Honolulu, HI, 96813. He has shot individuals, events, the Miss Hawaii pageants, and his work has a following of over 2,000. He expanded his creative reach by studying acting (he has studied with Eric Nemoto through his Acting Gym classes with the ADR Agency) which brought him in touch with Yellow Brick Studio, where he has acted in a number of LegacyVision Films. He played a photographer in So Close Shig, the role of Frank Andres, a member of a Board of Education committee in a flashback scene, in Prof Blood – Basketball’s First Great Coach, lonely Walt in Find Me, one of the wait people in the DPP office in Building Permit, and the heavenly St. Peter in The Trials Of Two Marys.

The Transition To Filmmaking
Acting in movies, and more specifically watching the intricacies of productions shoots, influenced Rick to eventually pursue a degree in film. He enrolled into the online program of the Los Angeles Film School, where as part of his academic program he needed to film a short film as part of a portfolio project that was required by the school. In the first week of his first class (screenwriting), he was required to write a seven to 10 page narrative script. Going in, he had already thought of developing a supernatural horror movie because of the building that his studio was situated in. The Blaisdell Hotel was built over a hundred years ago, 1920, and is purported to be haunted and rumored to have had a number of suicides within its walls, one particularly in the dark and grungy basement. Rick wrote the script within a few hours with some touch ups later.

The Production
Rick spent five months and five different LA Film School classes in the making of Sins Of The Flesh, finally filming the short in July 2023. He cast three great actors, Yama Radtke, Tristy Chun, and Mia Hoang, and in addition to filming within the eerie confines of the Blaisdell Hotel, shot the bar scene at the bar in the Proof Social Club. Rick knew Yama, who played the lead, Harry Chopin, from his participation in the ADR Agency’s Actors Gym, which was held in Rick’s studio on Thursday nights. Rick got to know Tristy, who played the mysterious Emma, when she came to his studio for a pre-Christmas gown sale. Mia, who played her namesake, Mia, Emma’s sister who lives her world in a coffin, was a Handi-van client of Rick who became his friend. Kellen Ferguson, played the bartender, Tommy, and was provided by the Proof Social Club.
